Quartzdek extends life of Brain Close Walkways

Unattractive balconies and roof walkways are a thing of the past for residents at Brian Close in Castleford thanks to Acrypol’s revolutionary slip resistant waterproofing solution, Quartzdek.

In total, 36 balconies and 18 roof walkways are now looking and performing as new at Brian Close – with the added safety benefit of a safe slip resistant surface that’s as flexible as a roof coating with the hard feel of a floor system.

Available in a range of variegated colour mixes and made from real quartz granules, Quartzdek is fast and cost effective to install to almost any pedestrian surface. The secret behind Quartzdek is real quartz granules which are applied over an incredibly tough, flexible polyurethane waterproof resin, all sealed and bonded together with a final layer of resin. Quartzdek can be used over concrete, cement, asphalt and even quarry ceramic tiles.

Some 826m² of red Quartzdek was installed over a three week period. Specifiers for Wakefield Council, property design and management company NPS North East, required a product that combined outstanding anti-slip properties with proven waterproofing integrity while also dramatically improving the look of the buildings’ walkways and stairways – Quartzdek ticked all the right boxes.

The Building Research Establishment (BRE) officially rated Quartzdek as having a low potential for slip when wet and an extremely low potential for slip when dry. It is a major vote of confidence for the many specifiers and building owners who have regularly depended on Quartzdek to prevent walkway or balcony accidents, especially in public or highly foot trafficked areas.

Its installation procedure is simple. The deck is first sealed with a coating of Quartzdek resin, thinned by 50% with a universal thinner. After eight hours a further coat of Quartzdek is applied in 1m widths. While still wet, the Quartzdek granules are scattered evenly. The surface is then left to cure eight hours. All excess quartz is brushed or vacuumed away and can be re-used.
